Claw Machine is the story of an immersion into the experience of being uprooted. Fragments and words. The unspoken, the indescribable. Memory shaken. Eyes closed. The city is under siege. Drift towards the unknown. The dilemma: resistance or migration? Mediterranean voyages of no return.
Claw Machine est le conte d'une immersion dans l'expérience d'être déracinée. Des fragments et des mots. Des non-dits, l'indescriptible. Une mémoire ébranlée. La ville assiégée. Des yeux fermés. Dérive vers l'inconnu. Le dilemme: résistance ou migration? Voyages Méditerranéen sans retour.
Το Claw Machine είναι η ιστορία της βύθισης στο βίωμα του ξεριζωμού. Θραύσματα και λέξεις. Το ανείπωτο, το μη περιγράψιμο. Η μνήμη κλονίζεται. Η πόλη πολιορκείται. Τα μάτια κλείνουν. Η φυγή προς το άγνωστο. Το δίλημμα είναι: αντίσταση ή μετανάστευση; Μεσογειακά ταξίδια χωρίς επιστροφή.

Project history
Claw Machine is a collaboration with Andrea Kantos, Sicilian visual artist and with Yousif Latif Jaralla, an Iraqi narrator/poet (hakawati/حكواتي).
In February 2020 I went back to Palermo for the exhibition of the body of work LET US STOP AND WEEP as a narrative-based participatory performance, at Eglise. I met again with Andrea and Yousif and we decided to pick up on Claw Machine from where we had left it and complete the work to be included as an opening screening for the performance. Since March 2020, through the COVID epidemic, we managed to work mostly online and produce many other scenes, new sketches and a full storyboard. In parallel we fine-tuned with Yousif the text for the voice over. The approach to making this film was that of a documentary essay, and the result is a handmade animation tale.
The film was completed in March 2023 with a co-production funding from the Greek national TV ERT.
Like other chapters from LET US STOP AND WEEP (Nabil & Corni, Asnam, Hafez from Anfeh, Red Poker…) Claw Machine has evolved into an autonomous one. It is now both a movie and an installation video for a narrative based performance.
All this research and effort to collect those stories around this experience is just an attempt to capture the deafening silence that engulfs a city and its people, their unheard screams and their silent terror, before fading voluntarily into the sounds of their flight and the sea waves.
Η πορεία του CLAW MACHINE
Το «Claw Machine» είναι μια συνεργασία με τους Andrea Kantos, καλλιτέχνη από τη Σικελία και Yousif Latif Jaralla, αφηγητή/ποιητή από το Ιράκ. Η προσπάθεια ξεκίνησε το 2009 με έναυσμα τους πολέμους στη Μέση Ανατολή (Ιράκ, Λίβανος, Γάζα). Το αρχικό σενάριο και τα σχέδια πήραν μορφή στο Παλέρμο όσο ζούσα εκεί, δουλεύαμε μανιωδώς ως τον Μάιο 2010. Αλλά η ταινία ξαφνικά πάγωσε, παρέμεινε ημιτελής και κατέληξε στο συρτάρι μου για την ακόλουθη δεκαετία.
Τον Φεβρουάριο 2020 επέστρεψα στο Παλέρμο για την έκθεση του «Let us stop and weep», μια αφηγηματική, διαδραστική performance. Συναντήθηκα ξανά με τον Andrea και τον Yousif κι αποφασίσαμε να ξαναπιάσουμε το «Claw Machine» από εκεί όπου το είχαμε αφήσει και να ολοκληρώσουμε το έργο ώστε να συμπεριληφθεί ως εναρκτήρια προβολή της performance. Από τον Μάρτιο 2020, μέσα στην πανδημία, καταφέραμε να δουλέψουμε κυρίως online και να δημιουργήσουμε πολλές επιπλέον σκηνές, νέα σχέδια κι ένα πλήρες storyboard. Παράλληλα με τον Yousif επεξεργαστήκαμε το κείμενο για το voice over. Η προσέγγιση της ταινίας ήταν αυτή ενός δοκιμίου τεκμηρίωσης και το αποτέλεσμα είναι μια χειροποίητη ιστορία animation.
Η ταινία ολοκληρώθηκε τον Μάρτιο 2023 με συμπαραγωγό την ΕΡΤ. Οπως κι άλλα κεφάλαια του «Let us stop and weep», το «Claw Machine» εξελίχθηκε σ' ένα αυτόνομο έργο. Τώρα είναι και ταινία και installation video για την αφηγηματική performance.
Βασίζεται κυρίως σε προσωπικά βιώματα στη διάρκεια του εμφυλίου πολέμου στον Λίβανο (1975 - 1989) και τους επαναλαμβανόμενους βομβαρδισμούς της περιμέτρου της Βηρυτού όπου μεγάλωσα, που οδήγησαν στη μετανάστευση των γονιών μου. Επίσης περιλαμβάνει στοιχεία από αφηγήσεις και συνεντεύξεις προσφύγων που ήρθαν στην Ελλάδα (2016-17), για να γλιτώσουν από τους εμφυλίους στη Συρία, το Ιράκ και το Αφγανιστάν. Κι έπεια, σχέδιο στο σχέδιο, γίνεται μια αλληγορία για τη μακρά ιστορία ξεριζωμού στη Μεσόγειο. Ολη αυτή η έρευνα και η προσπάθεια συλλογής ιστοριών γι' αυτό το βίωμα είναι απλώς μια προσπάθεια ν' αποτυπώσουμε την εκκωφαντική σιωπή που τυλίγει μια πόλη και τους ανθρώπους της, τις κραυγές τους που δεν ακούγονται και τον σιωπηλό τρόμο τους, προτού ξεθωριάσουν εκούσια μέσα στους ήχους της φυγής τους και των κυμάτων της θάλασσας.

Claw Machine è un progetto che ha il potere di trasformare il tema universale della guerra e della migrazione in un racconto intimo e personale, capace di scuotere, interrogare e arricchire lo spettatore.
Prize awarded to CLAW MACHINE by Georges Salameh. All the elements that make up the story are perfectly integrated with each other, allowing the spectator to immerse themselves and identify with one of the most current and urgent themes in contemporary history: migratory flows in the Mediterranean Sea. The cold and stylized black and white animations, the trembling and ruinous narrative voice, the metallic and pressing soundtrack, form a wonderful and disturbing poetic documentary, through which the viewer is able to identify with the loneliness and anguish of the narrator.
Claw Machine is a project that has the power to transform the universal theme of war and migration into an intimate and personal story, capable of shaking, questioning and enriching the spectator.

The film was voted winner unanimously by the jury.
We were touched by its simplicity, honesty, by its “no compromise” approach and by the fact that everyone in our tortured part of the world was able to see his own city, his own war and hear someone who understood that the decision of each one of us to stay or leave was a painful one. We also, from a production point of view, appreciated that so much was done with a low budget.
