US Marines landed to secure Beirut and its airport and soldiers of the Lebanese Army were stationed in many spots of the city of Tripoli, for about three months. Some were stationed that summer on my grandparents' terrace in the El Qobbeh neighbourhood, until diplomacy and a government of national reconciliation calmed down and ended temporally the crisis...

Conflict between President Camille Chamoun (Maronite Christian) and his prime minister Rachid Karamé (Sunni Muslim), with the Suez Crisis of 1956 and Cold War as a backdrop, triggerd the first United States military intervention in the Middle East, under the code name: Operation Blue Bat, welcomed by a hundreds of curious citizens, bathers and summer vacationers.

Le pays était au bord de la guerre civile. Un conflit entre le président Camille Chamoun (chrétien maronite) et son premier ministre Rachid Karamé (musulman sunnite), avec en toile de fond la crise de Suez de 1956 et la guerre froide, a déclenché la toute première intervention militaire américaine au Moyen-Orient sous le nom de code: Operation Blue Bat, accueillis par des centaines de curieux citoyens, des baigneurs et des vacanciers d'été.
Les Marines américains ont atterri pour sécuriser Beyrouth et son aéroport et des soldats de l'armée libanaise étaient stationnés à de nombreux endroits de la ville de Tripoli, pendant environ trois mois. Quelque uns ont été stationnés cet été-là sur la terrasse de mes grands-parents dans le quartier d'El Qobbeh, jusqu'à ce que la diplomatie et un gouvernement de réconciliation nationale, calma les esprits et mis fin temporairement à la crise...
